Giovanna Farrell, MSc

I was born and raised in a Melbourne, Australia. From a young age I have been curious and adventurous about the world, and these curiosities led me first to travel to Europe, Africa, America and Asia, and later to go on exchange as part of my university study. After starting my Bachelor of Arts, Psychology Degree at the Swinburne University of Technology in Melbourne, I travelled to The Netherlands, and followed a one-year exchange program (also focused in psychology) at Erasmus University in Rotterdam. I went through many changes in this year, and ultimately decided to take my adventure one step further and move across the world permanently. I moved back to The Netherlands in 2018 and completed my Master of Science in Clinical Psychology at Leiden University. This decision took me on a journey of learning to integrate into a new culture, learning a new language and finding my home between my place of origin and my chosen place to settle down. This experience has shaped me deeply since then, and I can resonate with both the joy and challenges that such a choice brings.

My therapeutic approach is client-centered. For me it is very important to create an informal, warm and safe space where we exist as equals. In this space we take a psychological journey together to better understand your situation and your needs and feelings and work towards insight and change. Embedded in my formal training and general philosophy is the idea that the therapeutic process should adapt to the needs of the person in front of me. Here I draw on different elements from the toolbox, such as Schema-focused Therapy, Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Mentalization Based Therapy (MBT) to facilitate the process of therapy.

I offer therapy in English and Dutch in Amsterdam.
